Still Life of Neanderthal Mandible

This still life of a Neanderthal jaw was drawn during a week-long Guild for Natural Science Illustrators course in Maine. Neanderthals co-existed with Homo Sapiens today people with European and Asian descent can share up to 2% of their DNA that is derived from Neanderthal DNA. It is important to realize having ancestral remnants of Neaderthal or Denisovan DNA does not provide an indicator of susceptibility to disease, of intelligence, or any deciding factor other than sharing the genetic make up of some physical traits. The Smithsonian used to have an app where you could photoshop your own face to fit in to a Neanderthal skull shape. Best to see the whole picture when looking back millions of years into our evolutionary story.
